Investor support

Investing in Tanzania

We work with investors entering Tanzania, guiding them through the compliance requirements that apply to a new operation and supporting them once it is running.

Tanzania rewards investors who get the compliance position right at the start. It penalises those who do not, and the penalties compound quietly.

Most of the difficulty for an incoming investor is not that the rules are unusually severe. It is that the obligations sit with several different authorities, they begin on different dates and nobody sends a reminder. An entity can be properly incorporated and still be out of compliance within its first quarter.

We take investors through that sequence in order, from the structuring decision to the recurring filings that follow, and we stay with the operation afterwards. The same team that registers the business handles its audit, tax and company administration, so nothing is lost in a handover.

How entry works

From decision to operating, in sequence

The order matters. Registrations depend on the entity, permits depend on the registrations and the filing calendar starts the moment the entity exists.

A twelve month filing calendar with each completed obligation marked
Obligations recur whether or not the entity is trading.
  1. Structure and entity formation

Choosing the entity and ownership structure, then completing incorporation and post registration filings. Decisions made here determine the tax position for years afterwards.

  2. Tax and regulatory registrations

Taxpayer registration, VAT where applicable, social security and the sector licences that apply to your activity. We confirm what is required rather than filing a standard list.

  3. People and permits

Employment contracts that comply with Tanzanian labour law, together with immigration and work permit matters for expatriate staff.

  4. Ongoing compliance support

Bookkeeping, management accounts, tax filings, statutory audit and company administration on a recurring calendar, so the operation stays compliant without you tracking each deadline.

After entry

Ongoing compliance support

Market entry is a project. Compliance is a permanent condition. These are the services investors most often continue with once the operation is running.

Common questions

What investors ask us first

What does an investor have to register in Tanzania?

A new operation typically needs a registered entity, a Taxpayer Identification Number, VAT registration where the threshold is met, social security registration for employees and any sector licences that apply to the activity. Work and residence permits are handled separately for expatriate staff. We confirm the full list against your specific activity before anything is filed.

How early should an investor involve an adviser?

Before the entity is formed. The ownership structure, the choice of entity and the way the investment is funded all carry tax and regulatory consequences that are expensive to change afterwards. Advice at the structuring stage is worth more than advice at the filing stage.

Can Ark act as the finance function for a new operation?

Yes. Many new entrants use our accounting support services rather than hiring a finance team immediately, then move the work in house as the operation grows.

Does Ark support the operation after set up?

Yes. Ongoing compliance support is the larger part of the work. Filing obligations recur every month, quarter and year, and most of the cost of non compliance comes from missing routine deadlines rather than from the initial structuring.

Are foreign exchange rules relevant to inbound investment?

Yes. The Foreign Exchange Regulations govern inward direct investment, borrowing from abroad and the remittance of dividends and profits to foreign shareholders. We cover these when planning how an investment is funded and how returns are repatriated.
